explitia has received support from the European Union to carry out an innovative R&D project – the development of a hybrid, scalable object localization and tracking system based on 3D environment mapping.
Description of the project funded by the European Funds and its objectives
The project funded by the European Funds for Silesia 2021–2027 aims to develop a SLAM (Simultaneous Localization And Mapping) system that integrates data from vision cameras and UWB (Ultra Wideband) technology. This will enable:
- detailed 3D mapping of the production space,
- tracking of moving objects (e.g. forklifts, AGV/AMR, racks),
- real-time data analysis, including the generation of heatmaps and spaghetti diagrams,
- route planning and work optimization by eliminating bottlenecks,
- automatic calibration of new objects in the system.
Project objectives
- Increasing the efficiency of object localization and tracking in industrial environments.
- Enabling the implementation of autonomous transport and logistics solutions.
- Automating space mapping and route planning processes.
- Increasing the competitiveness of enterprises through an innovative system.
Within the project, the following activities will be carried out:
- Development of algorithms for fusing visual and radio data.
- Creation of software for simultaneous localization and mapping (SLAM).
- Construction of a prototype object localization and tracking system.
- Testing of the system in industrial conditions.
- Implementation of automatic calibration functions for the positions of new objects.
Advantages of the system developed with EU funding
The system will operate reliably even in harsh environmental conditions (e.g. dust, low lighting, electromagnetic interference), making it an ideal solution for modern production and warehouse facilities.
Thanks to its functionalities, it will enable faster implementation of autonomous transport and logistics solutions in industrial plants.
Project outcomes and results
- Development of an innovative SLAM system for industry.
- Possibility of detailed 3D mapping of production space.
- Tracking of moving objects (e.g. forklifts, AGV/AMR, racks, containers, employees).
- Generation of heatmaps and spaghetti diagrams in real time.
- Automatic calibration of new objects in the system.
- Increase in the innovativeness and competitiveness of the beneficiary.
Target groups of the project
The project will bring direct benefits to the following groups:
- manufacturing and logistics companies (including the automotive sector),
- operators of production halls and warehouses,
- integrators of automation and logistics solutions.
